Studying psychology opens up a wide range of professional opportunities. Working as a psychologist is possible in many professional fields, depending on the specialisation. In order to facilitate orientation, a selection of professional fields will be presented at this event. Psychologists from each SFU branch will present their fields of work and provide an insight into their everyday work. There will be first-hand information as well as space for exchange and questions. The lecture series is open for all students, held in English and free of charge.

There are ten dates in total, each Tuesday from 6 pm – 7.30 pm online via Zoom. The overall course can be credited as an “additional course” (1 ECTS). The events of the lecture series can also be attended individually without obtaining a certificate. SFU students can register via Academy 5.

About the Lecture and the Lecturer

Psychosocial support and staff care in development cooperation, Anne Büttcher, MSc Psychology

In the field of development cooperation, especially in areas of conflict and crisis, people are sometimes confronted with certain events or challenging life and work circumstances that can throw them off balance. Therefore, the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ), the main German development agency, has set up an internal psychosocial counselling unit (COPE) for its employees, which consists of a team of psychologists and counselors who offer support in stress and crisis situations. After experiences of extreme stress or violence, they also provide psychosocial emergency care and refer to experts or specialized institutions if needed.

I have worked with COPE since 2019. Prior, I studied psychology in Berlin and Paris with a focus on social and organizational psychology and received training in counseling. In addition to stays in Romania (FSJ) and Benin (ASA program), I gained insights into practical counseling work through internships in different psychosocial centers, for example for older people with psychosis, and for survivors of torture and other human rights violations. In my master’s thesis, I looked at challenges faced by volunteers in a befriending program for refugees. On my current position, I work in individual counseling, crisis intervention, and staff care. My other interests lie in trauma theories, restorative justice, and anti-discriminatory practice in counseling.

In this session I will give you an insight into my work as an in-house psychosocial counselor and the specific aspects of working with people affected by extreme stress, conflict, and crisis, and thereby invite you to open your perspective into an international field of practice outside the traditional branches of psychology.
