Dr. Klier completed training as an adult and child psychiatrist as well as a psychotherapist and graduated from the Medical University of Vienna. She spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow at the Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia University in New York City with Myrna M. Weissman, where she began her research career in the field of perinatal psychiatry, particularly focusing on affective disorders following reproductive events. This led her back to the United States twice, where she worked at Drexel University in Philadelphia with Prof. Pamela Geller on the topic of mental health after miscarriage.
Her research interests include perinatal psychiatry, psychopharmacology during pregnancy, and pediatric psychosomatics. More recently, her research has shifted toward the area of infanticide and its prevention. After returning from a sabbatical in Australia, where she worked at ORYGEN at the University of Melbourne in the field of youth mental health prevention, she was appointed Associate Professor at the Medical University of Vienna in 2013. Over the past 10 years, she has served as Head of the Pediatric Psychosomatic Clinic at the Children’s Hospital of the Vienna General Hospital.
On January 1, 2026, she was appointed University Professor at SFU.
