Thomas is a German (civil law) and Australian (common law) trained Barrister, specializing in international private law as well as commercial litigation and arbitration. He is founding partner of Grotius Chambers, an international law boutique and consultancy firm in The Hague, Netherlands. Prior to that, he held positions in private practice, government and in the international civil service, including at the HCCH, the Australian Attorney-General's Department, and the Australian Federal Parliament. Thomas is an member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London). He is a widely published author who regularly appears as a key speaker at international conferences.
