Dr Thomas J. Schmal is a senior physician at the Department of ENT and Phoniatrics at the Hospital of the Brothers of Mercy in Vienna. As one of the department's phoniatrists, he is particularly concerned with voice and swallowing disorders, sleep medicine and the care of people with a tracheostoma (artificial breathing opening). In addition to teaching ENT at the SFU Faculty of Medicine, he has been teaching speech therapy and nursing students for
more than 10 years and is invited to speak at countless congresses. Before working as an ENT physician, he trained as a general practitioner, emergency physician and palliative physician.
